Things to Do

Our Recommendations

Where to start… Oaxaca and its surroundings are amazing. There are so many things to do, you could spend a month here and still be short on time.

We are so happy to be able to share this magical place with you and hope you’ll fall in love with the city like we did.

Here are a few of our favorite spots for food, drinks, and sightseeing in and around Oaxaca.

San Bartolo Coyotepec

Known for its Black Pottery

San Bartolo is where you want to go to see some of the most beautiful black pottery you’ll find. They do anywhere from sculptures, coffee mugs, shot glasses, and even refrigerator magnets (you know who you are). The craftsmanship is amazing and we think it’s a MUST (we have a few coffee mugs ourselves).

San Martin Tilcajete

Known for the Alebrijes

Alebrijes are (usually) wooden sculptures of mythical animals (usually combinations of different animals) painted in lively colors. They are believed to bring happiness and good fortune and considered to be a person’s “spirit animal” or spiritual guide. Each person has a unique combination of animals based on their date of birth (if you go they can tell you what your Alebrije would be and you can even commission one).

Hierve el Agua

Astonishing Petrified Waterfalls & Natural Pools

Hierve el Agua’s petrified falls are a thing of marvel. They were formed thousands of years ago by the petrification of water with high mineral content as it dripped down the mountain side. There are natural “pools” created by this same petrification phenomenon. You can hike down and around the waterfalls to get a view from the bottom, or enjoy the beautiful scenery from above. Completely worth the trip (don’t forget your bathing suit!).

Archaeological Sites

Ivan isn't a huge fan, but Clem likes the history

Oaxaca is home to one of Mexico’s most renowned archaeological sites in Monte Alban, there is also a less known and small site called Mitla (on the way to a few of the other places mentioned above). If you’re a fan of mesoamerican history and organized rocks… this is for you! (I tried making this more exciting… maybe should’ve let Clem do it).

Don't Forget to RSVP!
